WHERE WE DIFFER
“Drawing Values” focuses on learning and applying the fundamentals of drawing and painting, both figuratively and abstractly. The core of our philosophy is to clarify these fundamentals of visual arts. We provide a way to strengthen your creativity in academic and contemporary approaches.
“Academic” term is a structured approach commonly taught in traditional art schools. This method emphasises mastering various techniques, including proportion, perspective, form, edges, tonal values, and colour. It often involves studying topics such as the human figure, still life, and landscapes. Artists typically use methods like sighting and measuring to ensure accuracy in their work.
On the other hand, the term “contemporary” encompasses modern practices that focus on current themes and techniques. Unlike traditional approaches, it encourages experimentation. Moving beyond realistic representation to explore the elusive role of the form, abstract ideas, and mixed media. It often uses diverse materials and technologies, allowing artists to express individuality. Also, it responds to cultural, social, and political contexts, making it a dynamic part of today’s art world.
Where do these two worlds of different historical and social backgrounds meet? In their fundamentals! Contemporary drawing and painting often draw from academic principles that serve as a valuable springboard for exploring abstract ideas and diverse media. That said, contemporary artists may blend or completely deviate from academic norms as they develop their unique voices.
We aim to help students develop those technical skills to express their ideas effectively, serving as a foundation for further figurative or abstract exploration. Remember that just like any language, the language of painting has a structure; once you understand it, you can direct it towards your expressive goal.
LEARNING PROCESS
Drawing and painting is a visual language that allows artists to express their subjective views in a two-dimensional space. To navigate this subjective approach, you must develop this new “language” based on specific objective principles. Like any language, failing to grasp the basics can result in poorly structured images and concepts. For example, writing a poem or newspaper article is nearly impossible without studying the language’s grammar. In addition, art’s inherently intangible and subjective nature can lead to further confusion.
Our role is to offer a structured approach that covers everything from basic figurative concepts, such as comparative measurements, forms, edges, tonal values, colour, and technique (a natural extension of your style), to advanced abstract concepts applied but not confined only to figurative drawing and painting.
We will draw, discuss, and tackle theoretical and technical issues. Together, we will explore various works of art from different historical backgrounds. While we will encourage personal expression, our first emphasis will be on what we call “learning scaffolding.” This refers to our step-by-step approach to building your skills and understanding, much like the scaffolding used in construction to support a building.
ENVIRONMENT, TEACHING METHODOLOGY AND UNDERLYING PHILOSOPHY
Classes will take place in a studio that offers a supportive and comfortable learning environment, allowing you to express your creativity freely. Our studio is designed to be easily transformed according to the moment’s educational needs, from plaster casts to life drawing and from class assessments to art lectures.
Our teaching methodology involves regularly evaluating specific aspects of your work. We suggest and demonstrate various approaches to picture management. Every three months, each student undergoes a comprehensive assessment, during which we review their entire body of work. This will include critical discussions between students and tutors, followed by demonstrations with relevant examples if needed. This process ensures that you receive high-quality feedback and guidance, enhancing your overall learning experience.
Within three months, we are committed to helping beginners cover the fundamentals, enabling them to independently create images and assess their strengths and weaknesses. We focus on fostering a solid understanding of the visual arts “grammar,” which leads to improved critical thinking and aesthetic perception.
You will notice connections between drawing and everyday life values throughout the course. In my words, “Practicing art is like creating a micro-sculpture on one’s soul.” This course is not just about learning to draw and paint; it’s about developing an aesthetic approach to art and life. Our goal is to inspire you to appreciate the art world and the environment around you, enriching your daily experiences.
TOPICS AND MATERIALS
Our classes offer hands-on experiences with still life and live model compositions, boosting your confidence and preparing you for your artistic pursuits. The compositions will change periodically, offering variety and different observation angles. You will work with various media, including charcoal, acrylics, ink, and pastels, ensuring you develop a versatile skill set. Due to their extensive drying time and the obligatory use of solvents, oil colours are not to be used.
