WHAT IS FREEHAND DRAWING

DEFINITION

Freehand drawing enables artists to create images naturally without relying on tools such as rulers, grids, projectors, or tracing paper. Instead, artists depend on observation, analysis, and composition to compare shapes, sizes, tonal gradations, and colours. Essentially, they evaluate both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of their subject.

NATURE OF FREEHAND DRAWING

In freehand drawing, each work evolves like a natural organism, interacting with every shape, tone, and colour. This concept aligns with “the part in the whole.” For example, the human body develops its head, arms, legs, and internal organs simultaneously rather than sequentially. Similarly, freehand drawing progresses holistically. Additionally, as the students progress with their drawing or painting, they will gradually develop an individual expression. This is an extension as well as an integral part of their personality. The tutor’s part is to respect it! At the same time, tailored exercises should be added to enrich the student’s innate approach to personal expression.

WHAT ARE THE FUNDAMENTALS?

The fundamental components of freehand drawing include abstract perception, form/shape, tonal gradations, proportional measurements, and colour. We aim for students to grasp how to utilise these tools to interpret their subjects according to their creative vision. With a solid understanding of the basics, students can approach art without rigid concepts. A strong foundation allows them to explore various creative paths and evaluate their artistic journey.

BENEFITS BEYOND THE CLASS

At this point, something else is worth mentioning. Students may wish to pursue other artistic pathways, such as sculpture, etching, printmaking, or video art. What they will soon realise is that the fundamentals taught in drawing and painting still apply! Only the interaction with the medium changes; the visual grammar remains the same.
